PGA Tour Volunteers – The Backbone of the Valspar Championship

Each year, with the help of more than 100,000 volunteers nationwide, the PGA TOUR and its tournaments raise millions of dollars for charity, with more than $2.46 billion raised to date.

Volunteers here in the Tampa area have enabled the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T to earn $36 million for local charities since its inception.

Now fans can contribute to the charitable giving at the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T by voting in the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge sponsored by Myrbetriq® (mirabegron).

In its third year, this friendly competition honors the talent and dedication of the TOUR’s volunteers, including nearly 2,000 from the Tampa area.

From now until 2 p.m. ET on this Saturday March 11, participating volunteer teams are asking friends, family, co-workers and the general public simply to cast an online vote for them at tourchallenge.com.

At the end of the voting period, the volunteer team with the most votes will earn the opportunity to present a $10,000 check on behalf of Astellas Pharma US, Inc., to his or her charity of choice from a list selected by the tournament.

The tournament also has the chance to earn up to an additional $65,000 in charitable bonus funds based on the total number of votes received collectively by volunteers and the Valspar Championship.

“Volunteers are vital to the success of the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T, and the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge is a terrific way to honor these individuals for their contributions to the tournament while also supporting worthwhile charitable organizations that are making a difference in our community,” said Tracy West, tournament director.

One such volunteer, Bob McGivney of Palm Harbor, Fla., enjoys playing golf and is excited to witness the professionals up-close when the Valspar Championship is held at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.

As a member of The Copperheads and a banker with Jefferson Bank, Bob is committed to community service and takes his volunteer duties seriously.

For the past five years he has helped at the tournament wherever he’s been needed, parking cars, greeting fans at the gate and answering spectator questions. He enjoys the camaraderie between volunteers and interactions with the fans. A vote for Bob means a chance to help Big Cat Rescue.

The PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge is held at 16 tournaments during the 2017 PGA TOUR season and builds upon more than $1 million donated by Astellas Pharma US, Inc., the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Myrbetriq® (mirabegron), to tournament charities over the course of the company’s sponsorship with the TOUR. Additional information is available at tourchallenge.com.

“Our partnership with the PGA TOUR is reflective of the Astellas commitment to giving back by supporting programs that have a significant impact in the communities where we work and live,” said Walt Johnston, senior vice president, Sales & Marketing, Urology and Hospital, Astellas Pharma US, Inc.

The Valspar Championship presented by BB&T takes place this week at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. It features 144 of the world’s best professional golfers competing for a purse of $6.3 million.
